The Spruce Floor Lamp is a new piece, working with a familiar palette in aluminium and hand-made mulberry paper, creating a soft and gentle glow.
The design takes a more decorative turn to my previous work, taking inspiration from the stepped and flowing shapes found in temples in Southeast Asia, and merging with Art Deco influences closer to home. The resulting language of this piece feels both organic and architectural.
Our designs integrate Thai mulberry paper (known as Saa paper), hand made by small producers in the northern Thai province of Chiang Mai.
Richard’s work as a product designer represents a more tangible connection to craft, and has led him to build relationships with skilled craftspeople both in the UK and abroad. Nowhere more so than in Southeast Asia, where he works with ceramics, textiles and traditional paper-making in his designs. At the core of this is a belief that work made by hand is an act of resistance against automation, and that we have a duty to protect and regenerate these long-held craft traditions.
